Mam Tor (2)

Because it is formed of sandstone on the top of shale, the eastern side of Mam Tor is unstable and over the years has suffered many landslips. The effect of these can be seen here.

The "road" seen cutting across the disturbed area is what remains of the A625, formerly one of the main routes across the Peak District. There's a sharp bend by the trees, below which it runs down into Castleton, and then on towards Sheffield.

The road was repaired many times until it was finally abandoned in 1979.
