Oakwell Hall (2)

During the 19th century a series of boarding schools occupied Oakwell Hall. One of these was visited by Charlotte Brontë, who used the hall as inspiration for "Fieldhead" in her novel Shirley.

This is the main entrance to the hall, with the large window of the Great Hall to the left. This was created during alterations in the mid-17th century, and its size is a clear sign of wealth and status. As well as its use by the family, the Great Hall was the setting for the manor court.
