Marsden area (1)
Marsden is a large village about 6 miles (10km) south-west of Huddersfield, on one of the main routes between Yorkshire and Lancashire. Most of these routes had to cross the Pennines, making travel difficult, but this began to change with the coming of the canals.
The Huddersfield Narrow Canal, seen here as it passes through Marsden, was started in the 1790s, but wasn't completed until 1811.
