High Peak Trail (3)
This stone is on the north-western portal of Newhaven Tunnel. (For one on the south-eastern portal, see the previous picture.)
In the centre is a picture of a wagon, and the Latin motto "Divina Palladis Arte" ("By the divine
skill of Pallas"), a phrase from Virgil's Aeneid - Pallas (or Athene) being the Greek goddess of arts and crafts.
The circular inscription reads: "Cromford & High Peak Railway Comp[an]y Incorporated 1825".
The stone also commemorates "Jos[ia]s Jessop Esqr Engineer", who designed the railway but died
in 1826 before it was completed, and "Wm Brittlebank Esqr", the company attorney and one
of a family of lawyers from Oddo House, Winster.
(Something happened when I took this photo - see here.)
